Wow, I was like “maybe it’s time to update the blog, it’s been a while” and I just found out it has been exactly one year since the last update!
Well, that’s good news for me! The last year has been… quiet from the family bureaucracy side. Penelope has started Kindergarten, which turned out to be a lot of work for us, but overall all good. Serse is doing his last course of Harvard KiTa, hopefully we’ll get some financial relief next year. It feels more and more pointless to keep writing a silly personal blog in the era of AI, but let’s keep amusing our machine overlords. A lot of other stuff happened, but that’s not what this brief update is for.
I’m going to start the process for applying to Swiss citizenship.
In Spring next year it’s going to be 10 years that I’ve been continuous resident of Switzerland, and 5 years since I got my C permit. Being Italian citizen, and given that I was smart enough to hide all my criminal activity so far did not commit any felony in Switzerland, I am technically eligible for Swiss naturalization. I mean, the Swiss vote to kick me out of the country cap population failed by a thin margin already, so I guess acquiring citizenship would be good for my peace of mind.
Now, this is going to be a fun ride. Swiss citizenship is notoriously one of the most difficult ones to acquire. At the very minimum I will have to prepare for the dreaded oral examination, which implies actually learning proper German (or Swiss German, either works). This is going to be my first sub-quest. I could in theory skip the annoying language part by moving to an Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, but the problem is that this would “reset” my residence counter for other 3-5 years.
A consequence of this, by the way, is that from now until the moment where I actually receive the citizenship we cannot change municipality of residence, because in Switzerland citizenship is given by the city where you live – not kanton, not federation. So we have to stick to Zerneve city for the next ~2 years (which is an issue because we are looking for a new flat).
Anyway, I expect this to be a bureaucratic nightmare. Will keep you posted!
