Taxes 2024

The time of the year arrived when it’s time to file taxes for the previous year. I did it.

End of this post.

Just two things.

The first one is, it looks like the 2020 Tax Odissey is really reaching its conclusion. According to the preliminary tax assessment I received, this year I will pay very low taxes for 2024 because there is a credit balance in my favor due to the 2020 tax refund. I will confirm once I receive the final bill somewhere this year, but so far it looks good.

The other thing is how to pay taxes on our house in Italy. It turns out, we don’t really have to pay taxes in Switzerland on that (since we pay them in Italy already), but we are subject to a “virtual rental value” (Eigenmietwert) which adds something to my taxed salary representing “the money that I could make by renting that house if I wanted to” (sort of). It’s a weird Swiss thing, but it makes sense if you ask me. In my case this is 4.25% of the official value (“valore catastale”) of the house, reduced to 80% because of the standard lump deduction (“Pauschale”) for due renovations. It’s pretty low, almost negligible.

Overall it was not too complicated, but next year it’s gonna be a big mess with all the ANobAG thing. Stay tuned!
