House in Italy: Situation

Just an update on this story. So far everything went well. We bought the house and did all the bureaucracy in Italy. My parents helped a lot with that, we had some unexpected renovations to do but nothing big. The power of attorney trick worked, and so the house is now registered as “prima casa” (low taxation rate). Another optimization I did was regarding the “garbage collection tax”, which is calculated depending on the number of people living in the house. As we are nonresidents, I only put “1” as this number: the house is technically mine, and it’s my own business if once in a while I want to host there my wife and my children. I think it’s totally legal, and I don’t feel guilty at all about that given that we will stay in that house only very sporadically. I will have to pay property tax (“IMU”) on that house in Italy, but I will receive the bill somewhere later this year. IMU is usually not paid on “prima casa”, but since we are not residents we are still subject to it.

The situation for the taxes in Zerneve is a different thing, and will change a lot if and when we decide to rent the apartment, but for now our summer holiday house awaits us!
