Serse Goes To Holliw… Taiwan!

And here we go, ladies and gentlemen, because since we go to Taiwan next month, better do EVERYTHING, even if this means TO DIE. So, we’re also going to apply for Serse’s Taiwanese passport AND residence registration! When we did this for Penelope when she was born it was already a mess, and consider that she was born in Taiwan! This time it’s gonna be even more fun, because Serse is born in Switzerland, and Taiwan doesn’t even know he exists!

This post is just a teaser, I will explain in detail another time what we have to do. But, just to let you know, it involves steps which are both unreasonable and in random order, for example it looks like the first thing to do is to have Serse’s vaccination records somehow recognized in Taiwan. AYFKM.

Another question I want to clarify here is why. Clearly, having Serse’s Taiwanese passport is an important milestone: official recognition of double citizenship, easier bureaucracy in Taiwan, etc. The real question is, why residence? After all, we are residents of Switzerland! Is it even possible to have a double residence?

The answer is no, you cannot have double residence. Generally. But IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE yes. Clear?

See, unlike citizenship, residence is something related to the place where you live and pay taxes. Unless you come from a few third world countries (Eritrea, Hungary and USA) you only pay taxes in the place where you live. But babies do not pay taxes. So, it’s not illegal to register a baby as double-resident, just useless in general. However, for Taiwan authorities, having a citizen registered as resident unlocks all sort of other useful things which, in other countries, are generally bound to nationality rather than residence. For example, healthcare insurance and e-government. Most relevant for us, it gives right to receiving childcare allowance from the Taiwanese government. That’s right, even if the baby lives abroad! It’s not a huge amount of money, but it’s something nonetheless. We are already receiving this financial help for Penelope, so now we would like to register Serse as well.

Anyway, it’s gonna be FUCKING COMPLICATED, so stay tuned!
